How did you learn about MatadorU?
I saw the MatadorU program advertised on the Matador Network and thought it would be a great way to get serious about travel writing.
Why were you interested in the travel writing or travel photography program?
I have always loved to write, but pitching ideas and sharing my work was unfamiliar territory. The day I joined MatadorU, I found a community of helpful students and faculty who were willing and eager to share experiences, give constructive criticism, and offer support.
What convinced you to enroll in the program?
I was volunteering in Peru for three months and would check Matador for new stories whenever I found Internet access. Many of the narratives really resonated with me, and I wanted to learn the art of storytelling, so I decided to sign up and try it out.
What are the most valuable lessons you have learned in the U so far?
I wasn’t sure where to begin as a fledgling freelance writer, but MatadorU gave me the tools (and the confidence) I needed to start getting published. In addition to honing my writing skills, I learned how to use social media to market myself as a freelance writer. One of the most helpful MatadorU tools is the forum, where like-minded students can post pieces, questions, and feedback.
