How did you learn about MatadorU?

I learned about MatadorU when I was blogging for LaVidaIdealistcom. The editor there recommended MatadorU as a great opportunity to polish my writing skills and network with other editors.

Why were you interested in the travel writing or travel photography program?

I had been toying with the idea of travel writing since 5th grade, but it always seemed like an unattainable dream, comparable to wanting to play in the NFL. MatadorU gave me not only a guide to starting my career, but honest advice on the realities of it.

What convinced you to enroll in the program?

I decided to enroll in the program when I realized it was less of “how to write” and more of a community of like minded individuals who could offer me advice, tips, and leads on promoting my writing and finding my niche.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learned in the U so far?

I have learned so much in 12 weeks: the realities of travel writing, how to pitch articles, blogging advice, and most importantly, that there are lots of people who already went through what I’m trying to figure out and are more than happy to help. I’ve sold four articles and feel confident that I will have continued success.

[Editor's Note: Megan was also the first MatadorU student to go on a press trip organized by MatadorU. She is currently querying articles about her stay at an eco-resort in Mexico.]
