Workshop: Ways of Seeing

Overview: This four-hour workshop will help students develop their skills of observation and description. Workshop participants will be immersed in three distinct settings and will be given specific prompts for observing the people and settings around them. After sharing their observations, students will receive feedback about how they can both deepen and expand their ways of seeing, and will learn specific techniques for using these observations in their writing.

Course size: This course is limited to 4 participants.

Workshop: Nature Writing

Overview: This four-hour workshop will help students increase their awareness of the natural world and incorporate the non-human environment into their travel writing. Students will learn basic skills for “reading” landscapes and plant communities with a botanist, and discuss and practice techniques for writing about these observations in an engaging—and accurate—way.

About the Instructor

Teresa Ponikvar

Teresa has a BA in Environmental Studies and Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an MS in Environmental Writing from the University of Montana. She has worked as a Comp 101 instructor, a preschool teacher, a botanical field tech, a writing assistant, a Matador contributing editor, a factory worker at a dog crate company, and an English teacher, and is currently plotting to launch a career as a lavender farmer. She lives with her family in rural Oaxaca, Mexico.
